OpenAI unveiled GPT-5, the latest iteration of its landmark language model series, introducing capabilities the company says represent "a qualitative leap" beyond current AI systems — including real-time chain-of-thought reasoning, native multimodal understanding of text, images, audio and video, and a one-million-token context window.
Real-Time Reasoning
The model narrates its step-by-step thinking process in real time, allowing users to follow, correct and intervene in its logic chain. In benchmarks, this approach reduced hallucination rates by 67%.
Pricing and Access
GPT-5 is available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers immediately and via the API at $0.015 per 1,000 input tokens — roughly twice the cost of GPT-4o but with significantly higher performance on complex tasks.

As someone who has worked in this sector for 15 years, I can say the reporting here is accurate and the implications are as serious as the article suggests. The question is whether policymakers will act before it's too late.
The article would benefit from including voices from the communities most directly affected, rather than primarily quoting experts and officials. The people on the ground often have a different and equally valid perspective.
This deserves a much wider audience than it'll probably get. Mainstream media ignores stories like this.
